Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I publish my work with Quod Manet?

Quod Manet offers the professionalism required to produce excellent scholarship at an international level but, unlike many other publishers, refuses to treat academic work as profit-generating merchandise. Indeed, our authors are never asked to give away their intellectual property rights. Our approach to publishing is rooted in ethics, not economics. We understand that our authors have a unique vision for their projects, and we work in close collaboration with them throughout the publication process to produce the finest possible results.

Is Quod Manet a vanity press?

No, QM is not a vanity press. Each of our projects must successfully pass through a rigorous double-blind peer-review process before it becomes a book.

What, exactly, is an independent academic press?

An independent press, such as QM, is a publisher that is not affiliated with any academic institution, conglomerate or multinational corporation. QM receives no funding or direction from any outside source.

What is double-blind peer review?

Peer review is the process by which academics evaluate the quality of research carried out by another scholar, or "peer." The term "double-blind" refers to the fact that the evaluators do not see the author's name during review, and vice versa. It is especially important in QM's vetting because it assures objectivity and fair play.

Can I publish poetry or fiction with you?

No, QM does not publish creative works.

I have in mind a highly specialized or niche project. Would Quod Manet be interested in it?

QM promotes several research disciplines, including history, linguistics, philosophy, art history, literature, sociology, religious studies, gender studies, anthropology, medical humanities, cultural studies, film studies, digital humanities and more. Every proposal is thoroughly reviewed by the Advisory Board and other experts if necessary.

I'm an assistant professor. Can I publish with Quod Manet?

We believe, as does the Modern Language Association, that "when thinking about the best format in which to publish, authors should consider the wide range of available options and their implications in terms of medium, audience, accessibility, permanence and peer review." Academic publishing has changed dramatically over the last few years, as prices at university presses have skyrocketed and the serials crisis has paralyzed library acquisitions. As a result, perceived prestige no longer inevitably corresponds to reliable research. QM, though new, is dedicated to promoting intellectual exchange of the highest standards.

How long does the publishing process take?

The Advisory Board takes no more than a few weeks to evaluate proposals, but the peer review process can be time-consuming. Ideally, approved projects are published within twelve months.

What does "quod manet" mean?

Quod manet ("that which remains, or survives") refers to the ancient Latin proverb Verba volant, scripta manent, that is, spoken words are fleeting, but the written word survives.
